New York City Subway Train Drawings | Breaking in a new sketchbook.

Here are a some subway drawings I did over the last few weeks. Most of these were done on the ride to and from work on the E train. That's a whole two hours of drawing each day! I go to work five days a week, that makes it ten hours of drawing time a week (not including my time spent in the studio), so by the end of this month I would have drawn for forty hours. Pretty valuable practice time! Let's see if there are any results over a long period of time.

The robot looks like he got a tan...not crazy about his new color. I'm trying out these new gray scale markers. I think it's safe to say that they suck.

Sticking with Prisma Markers. Bitch.

Return to the Museum of Natural History

I went back to draw more bones. I drew a whole lot more this time around, but I think I might've burnt myself out. I don't know how anatomical/medical illustrators do it, bones are a real son of a bitch to draw. After hours of drawing, my eyes began to bug out, and my brain cried for me to stop. A lot of visual information was translated on to paper today. I can't wait until the day where I can go on without any breaks at all. Maybe I'll go crazy, and step over into an enlightened state of creativity. I don't know.

I'm still having a hard time composing properly, fitting everything in. Composition is tough to think about when you're so preoccupied in being accurate. The day composition comes naturally to me will be such a glorious happy day.

Comics about Life

Holy cow, guys!

I've been making a few comics for fun as you can probably tell from previous blog posts. I've been looking at a bunch of web comics lately and realized there isn't much out there that really makes me laugh. My sense of humor is stupid, but not that stupid...so I decided to make my own comics with my "taste" of funny.

Cause and effect. Life's brilliant way of making things interesting. It's in the physics, look it up!

And now, I present to you, the loverly prettiful pictures I drew.

Making the Old New

While cleaning and organizing my things in the basement, I had come across a line drawing I had done a while back of a lamb boy on a DIY watercolor card. The drawing was meant to get the idea down before going to a larger scale.

So yesterday, I decided to paint on top of the drawing. Not crazy at all about anything in this piece, but it was fun to paint for the sake of painting.

I really need to finish this painting though...

My Trip to the American Museum of Natural History

Dinosaur Skull Graphite Drawing in Moleskine Sketchbook by Alex Ariza

These are a few drawings I got out of my awesome trip to the American Museum of Natural History. These skeletons took a lot of patience and serious observation to get down proper.

As I was drawing, I began to realize how amazing living things are. Just from looking at the design of individual bones with all their ridges, curves, and angles, I saw that every single part of a living thing serves a purpose for survival. Anatomy seems pretty fucking cool if you can appreciate that.

I'm pretty sure once I start my Anatomy and Physiology class in October, I'll be hooked to want to learn everything there is to know about bones, muscle, tissue, blood, and all that other great gooey stuff that fills up your insides.

I definitely need to go back to the Museum to get lost in observing and drawing those dinosaur bones again.

Old Sacrificial Ritual Drawing

Finally got to scan an old image that I drew in my friend's sketchbook a while back. I should make more of these drawings again.

BASEMENT RECOVERY

I've been cleaning up my basement lately...getting rid of a lot of stuff that I don't use anymore to make more space to work and keep my musical instruments in order. I ran into this CD full of old drawings I did in college for Karen Santry's class. I still wonder if this is any good at all. You can be the judge of it.

Fred's First Car

Made a new watercolor/gouache painting for my buddy Jenn. She just moved into her first apartment, this is her housewarming gift.

Fred is a toy shark we found in the office I used to work at, it became our mascot and source of entertainment/humor during trying times and boredom.

I'm sure she'll appreciate it.
